Textile Handicraft: Foundation Diploma, 1 year
design studies, you will develop your creativity and sense of colour and design,
and work towards finding your own artistic expression. Theoretical textile
history is designed to lay out your introduction within culture and art history
with a focus on textiles. In our own dyeing facility, you learn how to dye yarn and
fabrics to colorize your textile works. In textile materials science, we focus on sustainability
and the environment. You will also deepen your knowledge of handicraft
theoretically through the study of binding theory and theory of weaving.
Further, you learn to manage software applications for fabric and knitwear, Point
Weave and Knit Design.
In weaving, you use counterbalance looms and learn how to weave apparel – and interior textiles, and test your own experiments. Based on your own sketches you get to practice quality planning and calculations. The knitting includes hand knitted techniques, patterns and traditions, as well as machine knitting. Artistic embroidery teaches you the basics in a number of different techniques. You can also try free embroidery. The program ends with an individual project in any one of the textile techniques with guidance in design and craftsmanship.
The program is full-time, daytime.
After completing Textile Handicraft: Foundation Diploma, you can apply for HV School's two-year Advanced Textile Handicraft Diploma. The program is also preparatory for further studies in art, fashion and / or textile in colleges such as the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design / Konstfack, Beckmans college of design / Beckmans designhögskola, The Swedish School of Textiles / Borås Textilhögskola, and HDK. There are several different possibilities.
The formal requirement is that you must have
completed upper-secondary school or equivalent education qualifications. You
may also qualify if you are expected to assimilate the education. Textile
experience and skills in colour - and design is considered additional
The tuition fee is SEK 9 000 / term, with additional costs for materials. Textile Handicraft: Foundation Diploma is covered by the Regulation of Art and Culture Education, and you are therefore eligible to apply for student aid (studiemedel) at university level. After having completed and passed Textile Handicrafts: Foundation Diploma, you will receive a course certificate.
Application and admission
1. To apply, use the application form and enclose a photo of yourself, a personbevis (a Swedish proof of identity similar to a birth certificate)
2. PDF portfolio containing four A3-pages according to following instructions:
Page 1–2: works where you have used textile materials / techniques / methods.
Sidan 3-4: works/projects executed in optional sketch technique. This can be for example; idea sketches, collages, photography, drawings or sculptures.
Please note that works containing of several parts, for example installations and collections can be displayed on one page in the PDF-portfolio.
3. Personal Letter
In your personal letter, please write a presentation of yourself and why you apply for the education together with a brief motivation of how you work / wish to work within textile.
Maximum one A4-page in PDF-format.

Late applications will be considered subject to availability of places on the course.
Admission to the course is determined through interviews with a selection of the candidates. An acceptance letter will be sent to successful candidates in June/July.
For non-Swedish students
Students must make their own living arrangements and make sure that they are covered by insurance before arriving in Sweden.
To apply, use the application form for non-Swedish students and enclose a photocopy of your passport, a personal letter addressed to the headmaster of the HV School, copies of certificates from educational qualifications and positions of employment and samples of your works of art, for example sketches, drawings and photos of works of textile art. Be aware that the application for a residence permit takes time.
If you are accepted to the FoH School we will send you a formal certificate of confirmation. You will need this document when you apply to the Swedish Migration Board (www.migrationsverket.se) for a residence permit. The permit is required by law of any non-resident who wishes to study in Sweden for more than three months.
Our teachers speak English, but since the classes are conducted in Swedish we require all students to study the language. Further information regarding suitable language classes is available on request.
