Danish textile designer and weaver, b. 1985

A consummate craftswoman, Rosa Tolnov Clausen is passionate about weaving. In her creative work, she examines the classical craft and seeks for how it can be used and viewed relevantly in the present. Many of her projects have a strong social component, which she explores by using weaving as her tool, put into tension by her conceptual approach. In a working process thriving on experimentation and exploration, she puts to test materials, methods and tools, to arrive at aesthetic qualities, partnerships and products that from the combination of these conditions appear with new functionality and purpose.

EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT KASURI

The weaving workshop EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT KASURI was based upon the Japanese weaving technique Kasuri.

EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT KASURI was the result of my three-month stay in Japan. In Japan I saw how cultural differences and meetings create an inspiring, dynamic and constant aesthetic development. I experienced the appreciation and preservation of crafts and tradition. Part of this preservation takes place through schools, but also through small craft workshops popping up everywhere, workshops where people meet to create, celebrate craft and socialise.

My wish was to make a Kasuri weaving project that explored the possibilities of the technique, which could bring a group of people together and emphasise the meeting of cultures.

The outcome was the Kasuri workshop EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT KASURI. The Kasuri technique seen through the eyes of a Danish textile designer. EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT KASURI was my textile interpretation of the amazing meeting of cultures I have experienced in Japan. It is my suggestion to how the Kasuri technique can be interpreted and bring people together.
